Apixaban Tablet contains the active substance apixaban and belongs to a group of medicines called anticoagulants (like warfarin) used to lower the risk of blood clots developing in patients who have a condition called atrial fibrillation (an abnormal heartbeat) as well as other risk factors for stroke. A blood clot that blocks an artery (blood vessel) is called an embolism. If the embolism occurs in the arteries of the brain it can cause a stroke. Anticoagulants slow down the time it takes for your blood to clot and reduce the risk of these events happening.
This medicine helps to prevent blood clots from forming by blocking Factor Xa, which is an important component of blood clotting.

Therapeutic Indication
Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adult patients with Nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF), including those with one or more risk factors, such as prior stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA)); age75 years; hypertension; diabetes mellitus.

Pharmacology

Mechanism of Action:
Apixaban tablet acts as an anticoagulant. It inhibits the activity of clotting factors by the liver. It prevents the formation of blood clots in the body and makes the blood thin.

Contraindication
● Apixaban is contraindicated in patients with previous hypersensitivity to Apixaban or any other component of this drug
● Active pathological bleeding

Interaction
● Antifungal medicines: ketoconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole and posaconazole
● Anti-HIV medicines like ritonavir
● anti-tuberculosis medicine like rifampicin
● medicines used to treat epilepsy like phenytoin, carbamazepine, and phenobarbital, Antidepressants like paroxetine, fluoxetine, diazepam
● Cimetidine, used to treat stomach ulcers
● Mycophenolate mofetil, used to stop your body from rejecting transplanted organs
